August 2 - Portsmouth: 27th Allen H. Chatterton Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament at the Carnegie Abbey Club Providence Children’s Museum will hold the 27th Allen H. Chatterton Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament at the world-famous Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, RI. Participants will take a turn on the Scottish-style links course, play in a tennis round robin, delight in spa treatments, or simply enjoy cocktails and dinner at the waterfront Clubhouse – there’s something for everyone!
Golf packages begin at $250 for individual golfers and $1,250 for foursomes and include 18 holes of golf, greens fees, cart, caddie, lunch, dinner, on-course beverages and a golf favor. Tennis registration is $150 and includes a round robin and dinner. Dinner-only tickets are available for $75 per person. All proceeds benefit Providence Children’s Museum.
Golf registration begins at 11:30 AM with a shotgun start at 12:30 PM and prizes will be awarded for skill contests such as longest drive, closest to the keg and closest to the pin – including the chance to win a luxury car for a hole-in-one.
The tennis round robin starts at 3:00 PM, dinner begins at 5:30 PM, and the evening includes a live auction featuring rounds of golf at exclusive courses.
The Museum’s first-class annual golf tournament was instituted in 1983 by the late Allen Chatterton Jr., an early supporter and Board member of the Children’s Museum, and is chaired by his son, Allen H. Chatterton III of Chatterton Insurance in Pawtucket. Proceeds support the hands-on exhibits and innovative educational programs at Rhode Island’s only museum especially for children and their families and enable the Museum to serve a growing number of children and caregivers of all economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. August 2 - Portsmouth: Slide show and talk about the Polio epidemic and the people who treated it at the Portsmouth Historical Society 7:00 pm at the Portsmouth Historical Society, corner of East Main Rd. (Route 138) and Union St. The Steel Cocoon: Tales of the Patients, Doctors and Nurses of the Iron Lungs, 1928-1955. Dr. Lynne M. Dunphy, Routhier Chair of Practice & Professor of Nursing at URI’s College of Nursing, will share stories of the polio epidemic patients and the doctors and nurses who cared for them in the mid-20th Century. This slide presentation will include historic photos of the people involved. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.

Learn how to serve up delicious, decadent recipes for foodies with limited budgets from the author of Poor Girl Gourmet, Amy McCoy. As a successful freelance producer for network and cable television, Amy McCoy once enjoyed gourmet food with little concern for price. Then the recession hit and the freelance work all but disappeared. But in the economic downturn, McCoy found her mission: to eat the best food she and her husband could while spending as little as possible. 934 East Main Rd. All the farmers who sell their produce at the market must grow it themselves. In this way, the market supports the people who are actually growing the food and as shoppers we get a higher quality product, e.g. riper peaches, juicier tomatoes, and sweeter sweet corn. In addition, all of the baked goods, canned goods, eggs, meats, flowers, honey, and crafts are produced and made by the farms and people who are selling them. Nothing is “bought in” or resold from another source.

Course: 5 mile loop with only 2 hills, some tight corners and turns and a rutty dirt road. Race starts and finishes at the Community Center with some nice views of Mt. Hope bay and the Sakonnet River. Timers at each mile; water stops at 1.5 miles, 2.5 miles and 3.5 miles.

August -- - Newport: Coaching Weekend at the Newport
Mansions Authentic 19th century coaches drawn by matched and highly-trained teams of horses will return to Newport from August 20-23, 2009, in the triennial renewal of a Weekend of Coaching, hosted by The Preservation
Society of Newport County. The public will enjoy free viewing of the colorful and historic coaches every day, as they drive through the streets of Newport and the grounds of the Newport Mansions, celebrating and preserving a century-old sporting tradition. Approximately a dozen coaching teams will come to Newport from around the country.
The routes of the daily drives will be published in the local press and the Preservation Society's website (www.NewportMansions.org), along with suggested viewing spots. In addition, there will be a free-to-the-public driving exhibition on the grounds of The Elms starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 22. The weekend will culminate with a formal Coaching Dinner Dance at The Breakers on Saturday evening.

August -- through Nov. -- - Portsmouth: Get Lost in Escobar's Corn Maze! Through Labor Day Hours are Mon through Sat. 10am till dusk, Sundays 11 - dusk. After Labor Day, Fridays 3pm till dusk, Saturdays 10am till dusk, and 11am -dusk on Sundays. (After Labor Day open midweek for large groups and school field trips by reservation only.) Open Columbus Day 10:00 - dusk. The Maze has 2 miles of paths, and covers 8 acres of the Escobar's Highland Farm at 251 Middle Rd in Portsmouth. This year's maze focuses on the "Go Green, Go Local" movement. It includes a windmill, oil barrels, recycling symbol and a gas pump. Dogs are welcome, but for their safety they must be kept on a leash at all times. If your doggie wants to run the maze with you they'll be happy to give you a bag so that you can bring out anything he might wish to leave behind to "trip up" other Maizies.

August with perfomance on Aug. - Jamestown: Annual Talent Show Open auditions for the 18th Annual Jamestown Community Chorus Talent Show, entitled "350 Years: Then and Now" will be held on Monday and Tuesday, August 13 and 14, at the Jamestown Community Center, 41 Canonicus Ave., Jamestown, RI (on the waterfront), from 7-8:30 PM. Performers from Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, and all East Bay communities are welcome to audition. A piano accompanist will be available.
